Hoffmeister no doubt wrote these duos to meet demand for challenging but not overly difficult music created by a large and advanced pool of flutists wishing to play for concert or salon performance. His works include 24 concertos for flute and orchestra, 7 concertos for 2 flutes and orchestra, approximately 40 sonatas and solos for flute and piano, approximately 130 works for 2 flutes, and nearly 70 compositions for flute and string trio--an unusually extensive range of works involving the flute.
