The set of 32 Variations on a Theme in C minor of Beethoven set the standard for both Beethoven himself, and his contemporaries. This set of variations on the traditional Latin song Malaguena meld Spanish passion with the technical prowess of the Austro-Germanic School. There is a slow and subtle opening, followed by a simple statement of the two themes. In between there are triplets, quintuplets, hemiolas, chromatic half steps, in single notes and octaves, rolling chords with the tune in the top voice, even a series of glissandos. Because the theme is so basic, it will soak up whatever technical or expressive devices that surround it. Running time is 7 mins 45 secs at recommended tempo, longer if taken a bit more relaxed.
