Like the Sonatine I for solo viola (commissioned by the Lionel Tertis Foundation for the 10th Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition 2010), this Sonatine II is cast in one single movement. Two main ideas (the opening rising phrase starting on a low C-sharp and the more luxuriantly harmonised descending theme) represent two subjects in a classical Sonata Form structure. An animated central passage transforms the opening ‘subject’ and could be seen as a development before the opening is reintroduced in a condensed manner. The sumptiously harmonic coda brings the work to an impassioned close dying away on the enharmonic of C-sharp, D-flat.
Roger Steptoe, Uzerche, France, August 2009

This work was commissioned by American Landmark Festivals for Stefan Reuss (cello) and first performed by him with the composer as pianist on 19th September 2009 in The Smith Opera House, Geneva, New York.
